Red Eye

There are many different reasons why patients may experience red eyes.  Patients may have dry eyes or allergies. Symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis (red eyes due to allergies) include itching, swelling and tearing of the eyes. Sometimes a blood vessel in the eye can pop and leak blood into the space under the white part of the eye. This is called a subconjunctival hemorrhage. Red eyes can also be caused by inflammation or a viral or bacterial infection. “Pink eye” is the term commonly used for a very contagious viral infection of the eye. Symptoms of pink eye include swelling, itching and crusting of the eye. A bacterial infection is often characterized by swelling, pain and mucous discharge from the eye. It is important to see your eye doctor if you have a red eye so they can determine the true cause of it and prescribe appropriate treatment.
